About the Artist:
Artist Bio: Kolby Van Camp is an amateur astronomer, award-winning sports broadcaster and content creator, and classical musician whose work has taken him to stages across the United States and abroad. A Kansas native and graduate of Kansas State University, he is drawn to the many ways stories can be discovered and shared within the world around him.
Whether sitting courtside at Garden City High School, commissioning and conducting new music with Sonus Chamber Choir, or photographing deep-sky objects whose light has traveled across immense distances to reach the Kansas night sky, Kolby’s work is connected by curiosity: a desire to look more closely, understand more deeply, and share meaningful experiences with the communities around him.
Artist Statement: Deep Fields: From the Kansas Sky is a continuing project photographing objects in the night sky that are either too faint to be seen with the naked eye or visible to us on Earth only in muted form.
Astrophotography allows us to see what our eyes cannot. Through long exposures collected over hours, faint traces of light accumulate into structures of remarkable color and complexity: nebulae where stars are born, remnants of stars that have died, and galaxies far beyond our own. In many cases, the light captured in these photographs began its journey toward Earth hundreds, thousands, or millions of years before reaching my camera.
All of these images were created beneath the Kansas sky. From a landscape defined by fields, open horizons, and extraordinary distances, the camera turns upward toward another kind of field—one extending farther than we can intuitively comprehend.
Deep Fields is ultimately an exercise in curiosity and perspective. These photographs preserve a small intersection between an ancient universe and a particular place and moment on Earth: distant light, gathered for a few hours beneath the night sky of Kansas.
