PIONEER FAMILY WAITING FOR THE TRAIN
&
MRS FULTONS FLOWER GARDEN
ON THE CORNER OF N MAIN AND DEPOT ST…
Two, tall, bas-relief tinted, concrete panels stand out against the background of the Garden City train depot. The side facing Main street depicts Mrs. Fulton and her Flower Garden, with the side facing the depot showing a pioneer family waiting for a train to Garden City. The piece was completed in 2007 by Leon, Kansas resident and well known concrete artist, Kivel Yankey.
Yankey is often recognized for his pieces on the Delano Clock Tower in Wichita, Kansas, and was hired for the Garden City Depot project 4 years after their completion in 2003. He studied the visual arts at both Wichita State University, and the Kansas City Art Institute. Some of his work can be seen on display at the Wichita Art Museum, as well as the Sheldon Museum of Art.
The moulds were created by first sculpting the images onto a large blank panel with clay. After this, a silicone/rubber cast was made. This cast would then be pulled off of the original, and used as a mould for the concrete pour. Once the concrete was hardened, the silicone mould could be removed and the concrete panels could be transported and mounted at the Depot. The panels are 6 foot by 9 foot and each weigh about 6,000 pounds.
