About the Artist:

Virgil Penner is known for his ink drawings of homes and buildings with detail architectural perspective. Since retiring in 2009 he has focused on acrylic landscape paintings.

Virgil studied art under Marie Orr for four years at Newton High School. Miss Orr turned out professional students in her teaching career at NHS.

His paintings are bright and colorful. He constructs his paintings from memory as he does not paint on location or from photographs. he feels he has more freedom to develop balance and movement in his final work. Growing up in Central Kansas Virgil’s paintings represent a regional nature.

Virgil Penner grew up on a farm East of Newton near Grace Hill Church. He attended District #59 Candy School, graduating from Newton High School in 1956, Bethel College in 1960, and a Masters degree in Education from Wichita State University in 1966.

After college he taught and coached in the Wichita High Schools and at Bethel College and was CEO of the Newton Chamber of Commerce 2000-2009.
